Webjay - "Alice's Restaurant" by nunovo

For those that don't know it, Bleeding Heart Liberals, such as myself, listen to "Alice's Restaurant" once, and only once, a year. That once is Thanksgiving Day. It is with great joy I present this link to you and hope it may become a part of your annual celebration!

Print Ad

Top of ad: Eyes, top of forehead, and helmet seen of a soldier from Iraq. In the eyes is a reflection of war… the everyday parts of war that unite soldiers as brothers. Seen to the left is the inside of a hospital tent. To the right we see soldiers gun-to-gun with rebels.

The soldier’s face is blended with a dominant field of the American Flag, touching the top of the bridge of the soldier’s nose, fading his face out and extending to the bottom third of the page.

Underneath the flag, in bold standard block print:

‘I am a Patriot and I love my country, because my country is all I know. I want to be with my family; the people who understand me’… Send me home.

This ad will run during the holiday season, and will be placed in each major paper on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

Focus On Equality

With the election over and the country divided on many issues it is important to stress equality among our communities. The ideals of Secular Humanists and Liberal Protestants differ greatly when it comes to belief in a supreme being, but in the end does it all really matter?

Both groups believe in equality of homosexuals. Hate and stereotypes of homosexuals should not and will not be tolerated. These days the country needs to stick together and unite around the belief that every American is equal and deserves to be treated that way.

While this voice is saying the script there will be pictures in the background of protests and parades for gay rights and equality. It will show diversity in people who support these rights and decide to take action.

Why divide?

pictures of various religious symbols from numerous faith backgrounds, ending with a picture of a mixed group of people of different races & gender & ages outside on say steps of Lincoln Memorial - yet half of the people on one side and half on other - sitting still with serious expressions

}Religion is what divides so many people - socially as well as personally.

Is it not about time that we use this divider as a uniter? Looking at two opposite ends of the specturm, the message could not be clearer... one can only hope it is seen. {for the next sections that briefly discuss both sides, pictures will not have different themes behind them - pictures of various ages, races and gender preforming community service acts and helping others - even put inner city children}

On the one hand, Secular Humanism realizes personal potential and feels working to better humanity is important. Despite whether or not it is from a naturalistic or supernatural standpoint, the bottom line, the message is strickingly similar to it usually opposing group of Liberal Protestants.

Liberal Protestants feel most important is how one conducts your life on earth. Doing good and avoiding harm to others is key. Once again, faith is not play a role; it is the mere idea of being a good person.

{ending image of the same group from the begining yet all standing together around the monument with smiles and conversing} Isn't there enough the world is divided on already? Why divide on an issue that can bring people together?

Is there are middle ground?

I have read many of the posts about finding a middle ground between Conservative Protestants and Secular Humanists. I agree that in some aspects of religion it is possible to agree. As someone pointed out the golden rule will apply in someway to each religion. However, finding a common ground with those who take their religion very seriously on the two ends of the spectrum is a difficult task. A conservative protestant wants to hear nothing secular humanists have to say about the big bang and visa versa concerning how God greated life.

There are several religions who take a more opened ended approach to life and death but regardless these religions were developed thousands of years ago, such as Buddhism. Imagining a secular humanists, buddhist, and conservative protestant finding a middle ground seems unlikely. This of course is unfortunate, but we must remember religion, for those who actively practice, is a way of life, a frame of mind.

Interestingly enough I find myself as a middle ground between these two religions. I was confirmed cathoic, but I am not religious. I believe in a God, but I do believe in the scientific theories of how the world was created. Free will, in my opinion, is a huge basis on the behavior of people, regardless of religion.
